A demonstration of the open siphon effect [VIDEO]

A demonstration of the open siphon effect, a result of the extreme extensional thickening exhibited by the material. Samples are a 0.5% solution of 8,000,000 molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) in water (red) and a 0.5% solution of 8,000,000 molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) in water with 45-60 nm silica nanoparticles (blue).

An amazing physical phenomenon

Properly selected shaking means that the liquid layer cannot drain and levitates in the center of the container. The pressure underneath pushes light objects into this layer, causing them to float upside down in it.
