A demonstration of the open siphon effect [VIDEO]

A demonstration of the open siphon effect, a result of the extreme extensional thickening exhibited by the material. Samples are a 0.5% solution of 8,000,000 molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) in water (red) and a 0.5% solution of 8,000,000 molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) in water with 45-60 nm silica nanoparticles (blue).
